Black Embodiments Studio 2022
Azikiwe Mohammad and I first met and collaborated via an interview with Foundwork. We had the opportunity to run it back and extend our conversation thanks to Black Embodiments Studio. As its 2022 residents we were tasked with creating content about Azikiwe’s work and engaging participants in their Arts Writing Incubator over the course of three months. Check out our initial convo above!
You can also check out my meditations on Mohammad’s work here as an entry of Black Embodiments Studio’s Year in Black Art journal.
Professional Text:
Artist Azikiwe Mohammed and writer Stephanye Watts are the Spring 2022 guests of The Black Embodiments Studio Artist + Writer Initiative. Over the course of several months, they embarked on studio visits and conversations about their practices, with the specific goal of helping Watts develop two new pieces of writing about Mohammed's practice. In this conversation, they connect about the art, objects, and practices that give them life—staging a conversation about the limits of categorization (and institutionalization) when it comes to Black cultural production.
